240/500 Kilovolt Steel Lattice Transmission Line Construction

Transmission line construction requires a large workforce as well as significant quantities of material and equipment. Different stages of construction will take place at different times depending on your location along the transmission line right-of-way.

  1. Workspace preparation and materials delivery
The right-of-way and structure locations must be prepared for work and building approaches to access the land, including removing trees/vegetation as needed. Structure materials are delivered to work sites.
  2. Foundations
Foundations for the structures are installed. They may be concrete, screw piles or driven piles.
  3. Structure assembly
The structure is assembled in sections either on the right-of-way or in a staging yard.
  4. Structure erecting
The structures are erected using cranes or helicopters.
  5. Structure Stringing
Transmission line wire (called conductor) is delivered and attached to the structures. Cranes or helicopters may be used to string the conductor.
  6. Line Work
The wires may be fused together using implosive connectors, which produce a loud explosion. on days when this work is scheduled.
  7. Energization
Quality and safety inspections are completed and the new transmission line is energized and connected to Alberta’s grid.
  8. Reclamation
Reclamation and clean-up begins once the transmission line stringing is complete. We aim to return the land to its previous condition after one post-construction growing season.
